Basketball
Has "Rivalry Week" ever meant so much in KU history? Possibly, but not as much as it does this season. A lot is on the line and it all plays a part in determining whether or not KU gets a favorable seed for the Big 12 Tournament and the big post season dance. But, first things first! The Sunflower Showdown, Part Deux!! Who would've guessed that K-State would be ranked 5th in the nation let alone ranked at all? It's time for the 'Kittens to head to Larryville and they're gunning for an upset on "Sherron Night in the Phog"....uhhh...I mean "Senior Night in the Phog." The only senior on KU's roster this year is Sherron Collins. It's fitting seeing that the all time winningest player in KU history with 124 career wins, thus far, will be serenaded on his final night inside Allen Fieldhouse after one of the biggest games of the season. Having the spotlight on just one guy on this night somehow seems very appropriate.
You know the tears will be flowing with how much KU has meant to him, but let's just hope they're tears of joy and not sadness by capping off a win against our instate foe. Sherron is definitely considered one of the best Jayhawks of all time. Coming off a lackluster performance in Stillwater against OSU, the emotion of Senior Night, and having the eye on the prize in focus might be just what Sherron needs in order for the ol' Collins to return. The guy we know who would bury the distant three with a hand in his face or drive the lane while splitting defenders on his way to the rim. K-State is looking for a piece of the Big 12 Title and can do so with a win in Lawrence. A big road win in Lawrence could possibly throw them into the top three or four teams in the nation as well. Wow, I can't believe national poll top four status and K-State basketball can be used in the same sentence, unreal. Nonetheless, it will be a full effort from both squads. There's so much surrounding this game it's one you won't want to miss. If KU is to claim the conference title outright, continue that home winning streak, and maintain the path to NCAA Championship glory they'll need to bring it one hundred and ten percent.
KU will have to continue that 110% effort again on the road later this week. "Rivalry Week" continues in Columbia with the Border War against Mizzou on Saturday. The Tigers aren't playing for much more than pride, but they'd love to give KU another loss in the "W" column and help ruin the high road to Indy. We all know how much these two teams despise one another so whether or not there is anything to play for, there IS always something to be played for. Mizzou will bring on their 40 minutes of you know what and their home crowd will be hostile as usual. Closing the regular season on a win would also be ideal for the Jayhawks.
The Jayhawks are neck and neck with Syracuse and Memphis in the polls. All three teams are gunning for the road to Indy through St. Louis. In order for KU to guarantee that home court advantage and make it to a second Final Four in three years, the Jayhawks will need to finish with nothing but wins and it all starts tonight. So, if you didn't know the importance of Rivalry Week before, you do now!
Football
There isn't much to report on the football front. With several strong recruits in place for next season and several returning players, KU football looks ahead with promise. With the favorable, yet unproven new head coach, Turner Gill, KU has the foundation to surmount to great things this upcoming season. Coach Gill and his staff have already got an early jump on recruiting for 2011 and it looks like they're not afraid to dip into the football mecca of Florida or Texas. Spring ball is just around the corner with a large portion of the fan base ready to see what the new coach and his staff is all about. This is the beginning of some great things for KU football.
Updates on players of football's past are beginning to make their way to the news front. Several former KU players were invited to the NFL combine and are looking to perform with success in order to get picked up on draft day. Word has it that Kerry Meier and Dezmon "Da Breeze" Briscoe had decent workouts while Darrel Stuckey had a great workout. Stay tuned. It would appear likely that all three would get picked up by the pros. As for the infamous Todd Reesing, he's still plans on trying out for few teams in hopes of fulfilling his Flutie-like NFL dreams. If not, he may give the football league in Canada a try. Hut! Hut! Hike! Eh?!!
